Prior Knowledge
Students are expected to have covered the
relevant material taught on the IMIS Higher Diploma (H14 & H16 in
particular). Students are also expected to have carried out a previous
programming project such as that outlined in the Programming Project module of
the IMIS Diploma.
Assessment
By assessment of the project development work
carried out, the final product and the written report.
Aims
-
To
develop the ability of a student to tackle, individually, a selected problem to
a reasonable depth of understanding.
-
To
develop the ability of a student to organise and produce a professional product
using an engineering approach.
-
To
develop the ability of a student to produce technical documentation to a high
standard.
-
To
develop the ability of a student to produce an analytical report which
communicates the work carried out in the project and evaluates the final product
and the student’s contribution.
Description of the Project Work
The work carried out must be a practical,
problem-solving project. It should be a realistic project in the sense that the
product should be constructed from the requirements of a project sponsor. That
is to say, it is not sufficient that the student creates a program simply for
their own purposes. The project should:
- be
intended to develop an IT solution to a practical problem
- be
carried out using an engineering approach
- emphasize design
- be
carried out individually and take between 100 and 120 hours of work typically
-
normally result in the production of a piece of software
-
include appropriate technical documentation
- be
fully described from inception to completion in a written report produced to a
good level of professional competence
